SHAIKH Ayaz (1923-1997) is the greatest poet of the Sindhi language after Shah Abdul Latif Bhitai.
His poetry and prose drew upon the very original local references of culture. Before him, poets were afraid of using local references, similes, metaphors, symbols in their works, thinking these as drawbacks in the face of dominant Persian literary values then.
Ayaz discarded such alien and foreign parameters of excellence and recognition. He wrote in pure national and local context, using original metaphors, literary devices and local themes in order to lay a strong basis for Sindhi literature.
He is one of the pioneers of modern Sindhi literature and language. He wrote many books in Sindhi, as well as in Urdu, covering a variety of subjects and themes.
His books were translated almost in all the important languages of the subcontinent and in many western languages.
Recently, Shaikh Ayaz Day was observed in Hyderabad. On that occasion prominent literary personages and icons demanded a university in Shikarpur, the birthplace of Shaikh Ayaz, after his name.
Establishing institutes, colleges and universities is a symbol of living and aspiring nations.
Sindh is in great need of universities and institutes to cater to modern knowledge. Not only in Shikarpur but also in Ghotki universities should be established to cater to the requirements of the new generation.
